Forms That Prove Dynamic

What is a form that is considered dynamic? When I am considering this limit while making a project I think of it as having something to look at, at all views of the object. You should be able to spin this object and have something new, that also catches your eye, all around the form.

When I am presented with a problem (my term for an art project) I can almost Immediately see the vision of the solution to said problem. When presented with the idea of two forms, one coil and one slab, I started to think of ways that I could combine the two into one form so I would not have to make two vessels. My solution was to add slab walls against my coil walls.

Slab Wall

After adding these slab walls I decided that they were too boring and flat and they needed more substance. My solution was so add some flowers on top of the slabs.

Here you can see where I added the slab walls and flowers. In addition to these flowers I used a turquoise underglaze and some sgraffito techniques to tie in swirls that I added around the rest of the piece.

Another funky addition were the swirls that I mentioned above. I have worked on ceramic pieces in the past that I had incorporated swirls into. I have come to realize that swirls are a great addition to coil pieces and add some extra stability to the structures as well as diversity.

Finally, the last part of my solution was to use the turquoise underglaze to coat the inside of the piece to give viewers something interesting to look at when they decide to look inside the pot. Adding this color inside was a way to drag viewers in closer as the blue against the contrasting orange of the clay would stand out as people pass by.

Entrapment

After the piece was done and fired I decided the finishing touch was to add some clear glaze to make it shiny and glossy. One thing I was worried about was how thick the glaze was when i dipped the piece in. I was concerned about it being too cloudy since I usually paint the clear glaze on my pieces. When it first came out of the Kiln I was a little disapointed because the turquoise wasn’t as bright as it was when i painted it on the bisqueware. But I decided it was better to wait and look at the piece as a full after it was pulled out of the Kiln.
